In a long stitch book the text pages are sewn directly to the cover material, in this case, leather. The sewing thread is visible on the outside of the cover with the position of the sewing holes determining how much of the thread shows. The sewing holes may be arranged in a variety of ways creating a design element for the book. Once the book is sewn the exposed thread may be even further worked—tied, wrapped, or even woven. Often beads are added to the exposed threads. A leather thong is used as a closure for the book. And there will be a variety of leathers to choose from for the cover.
